Matthew 24 contains one of the most discussed passages in the New Testament. In this chapter, Jesus speaks privately with four of His disciples on the Mount of Olives about the coming destruction of the Temple, the fate of Jerusalem, and the events associated with the end of the age.
Because of its prophetic nature, the Olivet Discourse has often been misunderstood or interpreted out of its historical context. A careful comparison of Matthew 24, Mark 13, and Luke 21 helps clarify what Jesus was describing and when those events would occur.
This study examines the Olivet Discourse in its proper setting, paying close attention to the questions asked by the disciples and the answers Jesus provided.
In this study we will examine:
- The questions the disciples asked Jesus on the Mount of Olives
- The historical events surrounding the destruction of Jerusalem
- How Matthew’s account compares with Mark 13 and Luke 21
- The meaning of key prophetic statements in the discourse
- The broader covenant context in which Jesus spoke these words
By examining these passages together, the goal is to better understand the discussion between Jesus and His disciples and the events that would soon unfold in the first century.
