The 70 Weeks of Daniel

The Seventy Weeks of Daniel is one of the most discussed prophecies in the Bible. In this short study, we examine Daniel 9:24–27 and explore how the prophecy connects the return from exile, the coming of the Messiah, and the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 AD. By looking carefully at the historical context and the structure of the prophecy, this course shows how the events described in Daniel unfold in the first century.

The prophecy of the Seventy Weeks in Daniel 9:24–27 has been debated for centuries. Many interpretations attempt to place its fulfillment far into the future, often treating the passage as a complicated mathematical puzzle.

In this study, we take a different approach by examining the prophecy within its historical and biblical context.

Beginning with the Babylonian captivity and the return of the Jewish people to Jerusalem, this course traces the events described in Daniel’s prophecy and places them within the timeline of history. Along the way we explore the structure of the prophecy, the six acts described in Daniel 9:24, the key events outlined in verses 25–27, and the role of the Messiah in bringing the prophecy to fulfillment.

The study also examines how the teachings of Jesus in Matthew 23 and 24 connect directly with Daniel’s prophecy and how the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 AD marks the conclusion of the prophetic timeline.

By the end of this course, students will have a clearer understanding of:

  • the historical background of Daniel 9
  • the structure of the seventy weeks prophecy
  • the role of the Messiah in the prophecy
  • the meaning of “desolation” in the biblical context
  • and how the events of the first century fulfill the prophecy described by Daniel.

This study is designed to help readers approach one of Scripture’s most challenging passages with clarity, historical awareness, and confidence in the reliability of the biblical record.
